Ultrafine polarizers made of liotropic chromonic liquid crystals

They are fabricated of ultrafine (thickness is less that 1 µm) dye films deposited on the liotropic chromonic liquid crystal substrates. Polarizer transmittance is balanced in a wavelength range of 450 – 800 nm.

Advantages:

  • polarization efficiency is up to 99 % for dichroic ratio 12;
  • for wide viewing angles transmission of the crossed polarizers is very low (0.1~0.2%) comparing with the conventional dichroic polarizers (~3%);
  • polarizers can be easily imprinted on different substrates.

Applications:

  • internal polarizers for flexible displays with plastic substrates (display quality is not affected by birefringence of plastic);
  • compensators for flat displays (TN, STN, VA, IPS).
