Lecture title: Optical manipulation of small objects: from atoms and molecules to subwavelength particles.

Lecture abstract: Light can exert stronge enough forces at the micro- and nanoscale allowing to confinement or trapping of a wide range of particle. The ability to manipulate, cool and trap small objects like atoms, molecules, clasters, nano- and micro particles using laser light has evolved into a practical tool with applications beyond the narrow scope of physics, and in particular, has enabled remarkable discoveries in biology and medicine. This lecture deals with the basic mechanisms used in laser manipulation, and illustrates major achievements in this field by the example of several key experiments.
