Education:

1964-1969 –Physical Department of Kiev State University named after T. Shevchenko, Master degree cum laude in Nuclear Physics.

Research areas:

Solid state electronic properties, physics of superconductivity, electron theory of surface phenomena, electrochemistry, history and methodology of natural sciences.

Most important results obtained:

A thermodynamic theory of superconductors with the electron spectrum, partially gapped due to the nested character of the Fermi surface sections, was developed. The heat capacity jump at the superconducting transition was shown to decrease under the influence of the charge-density waves (CDWs). The theory has been confirmed by the experimental studies of the oxide BaPb1-xBixO3. A violation of the Anderson theorem was predicted for the superconductors with CDWs. A theory of the tunnel currents in the superconductors with CDWs was built. A new method of the detection of the charge carrier spin polarization in ferromagnets was proposed by using tunneling across contacts with CDW electrodes. Theory of spin-dependent electron tunneling in junctions with CDW- normal and superconducting electrodes was developed.

New criterion of superconductivity for single-element superconductors was suggested taking into account of the ion-core repulsion. A theory of superconductivity for doped semiconductors was developed.

Multiple Josephson effect in the superconducting ceramics BaPb1-xBixO3 was discovered. Logarithmic magnetization relaxation and the resistive 1/f noise were for the first time observed in these solid solutions.

Self-consistent theory of the superconducting state with an account of the interdependence of the energy gap and the temperature (T) dependent inverse scattering time 1/t was developed. On the basis of this theory transport properties of superconductors were calculated.

Theory of low-T properties of the mesoscopically inhomogeneous superconductors was developed. It was shown that the exponential law, inherent to clean superconductors transforms into a power law. The results are used to explain transport and thermodynamic properties of high-Tc cuprates and MgB2.

Theory of the Coulomb interaction in the electronic three-layer systems with an account of the spatial and temporal dispersions of the dielectric permittivity was developed. The law of the electrostatic interaction of the adsorbed atoms on the substrates, made of metals with different kinds of the Fermi surface, was found. Energy spectrum of the electron surface states over the liquid helium surface was calculated.

Theory of the electrostatic contribution to the surface tension at the interface electrolyte solution/metallic (semiconductor) electrode was elaborated.

Theory of the dynamic image forces in two- and three-layer metal and semiconductor systems was elaborated. The deviations from the Fowler-Nordheim law observed for the field emission at high currents were interpreted as the consequence of the non-adiabaticity of the electrode plasma response to the electrostatic field of an emitted electron.
