Major research areas

Solid state physics: spectroscopy, optics and x-ray analysis of molecular and liquid crystals.
Significant results

- In the field of spectroscopy of molecules and crystals: the technique for determination of energy and spatial structure of multi-atomic molecules by means of measuring of the low-temperature electronic absorption spectra of crystals in polarized light was elaborated. This method was used for investigation of molecules of wide range of benzene derivatives as described in [1].
- In the field of physics of excitones: the specific spectral peculiarities of crystals possessing spatial dispersion were found (deviation from Lambert-Bouger law, anomalous dependencies of absorption bands on the thickness and temperature) [2].
- Conjugated states of triplet excitones were found. They appeared to be determined by the static dipole-dipole interaction at the high intensity of pumping light and resulted in the change of main spectral and kinetic characteristics [3].
- In the field of spectroscopy and optics of liquid crystals: the optical bistability and dynamic holography gratings in dye-doped nematic chiral liquid crystals were obtained for the first time. The writing time is ~ 10 ns and diffraction efficiency ~ 10 - 12 % [4, 5].
- X-ray investigation of the arrangement of metal-containing molecules in liquid crystalline phases was fulfilled [6]. Small-angle x-ray investigations of mesogenic matrices in different temperature intervals and of chiral agent as separate system were made [7].
- Optical activity and self-diffraction under external factor influence in dye-doped chiral and ionic liquid crystals [8,9].
- The narrow-band visible spectral range colour filters based on chiral liquid crystalline materials were designed, as well as two-colour information display governed by electrically controlled twist cell.
